How to Justify the Investment of a Fall Protection System

Over the years we have quoted many companies on the installation of fall protection systems, some have decided not to make the investment in safety. Many times companies have a difficult time justifying the expense because there is no direct return on investment. The truth is investing in fall protection does not just save money, it saves lives!

We created the benefits list below that we share with Safety Managers to help them gain approval from their management team for proposed fall protection projects:

- Falls are among the most common causes of serious work related injuries and deaths. Employers must set up the work place to prevent employees from falling off of overhead platforms, elevated work stations or into holes in the floor and walls.

- Fatal falls, slips or trips took the lives of 668 workers in 2012 and 681 workers died from falls in 2011. 1 in 4 deaths occurred after a fall of 10 ft or less. Most shocking is that over 243,000 non-fatal falls were recorded in private industry workplace.
- Average cost of a fall from elevation ranges from $500,000 – $1,000,000.00. When third party lawsuits are involved the costs are much higher. Third party lawsuits and workers compensation costs are the biggest portion. There are documented jury awards of $19 million and $24 million. Workers comp costs are at least equal to the cost of benefits and settlements paid to an injured worker. Insurance companies get their money back!    Read the complete article here...

Creating a Safer Workplace

Each year, falls from heights ranging from just a few inches to 120 stories account for more than 30 percent of all fall-related injuries and work-related deaths. Such injuries not only endanger the integrity of the workplace and the safety of employees, but also cost businesses millions of dollars each year in medical expenses, lost wages, and lower productivity.

Therefore, fall protection planning and the correct fall protection training are essential to ensuring the safety and health of your employees and your company.

Webinar: Don’t Slip, Trip or Fall for It! General Industry Requirements for
Fall Protection

DATE: October 2, 2014
TIME: 3:00PM ET - 2:00PM CT - 12:00 PT

There seem to be a lot of misconceptions and misunderstanding about the definition and application of fall protection requirements for General Industry. Fall protection is viewed and applied differently in the General Industry standards than it is in the Construction standards.

Through this presentation, the speaker hopes to clarify the differences, and how the General Industry and Construction regulations are applied to those workers not involved in “construction” work. Included are details of the definitions and requirements that apply under this standard. Also discussed are efforts by OSHA to bridge the gap and provide total fall protection coverage for these workers.  Click to register....

Three Safety Cultures - Which One are You In?

Whenever I deliver a training class to a group of workers for whom I’m also serving as a safety consultant, I explain that there are two things I need to do: 1) Keep them safe and 2) Keep the company compliant.

In that order.

The trick is that if I’m achieving the first one, I am almost always achieving the second one by default. This is a good place to begin because some workers are simply distrustful of safety professionals, whether because of a bad experience in the past or because they feel that safety professionals exist for no other reason than to save the company some money. It is important that they understand that their well-being comes first.

Creating a Fall Protection Plan and a Safer Workplace
Once a company determines the need for a fall protection system, there are four options to evaluate: eliminate, prevent, restrain, and arrest.

By Kevin Duhamel

Falls regularly top the list of workplace dangers each year that insurance companies and government regulators track. Now more than ever, companies face the task of developing a comprehensive fall protection plan. Designed to address workplace hazards, a fall protection plan is critically important both for the safety of employees and the company's bottom line. If companies ultimately want to keep their workplace safer, they need to pinpoint fall protection goals, identify and select a fall protection system that best fits their specific application and keep their chosen system safely and effectively operating.

Fall Protection Systems Save Your Employees and Your Budget
Susan Griepsma Friday, August 29, 2014

Most successful companies share one common priority: their employees’ safety. Upholding that priority often comes with the need for fall protection. Yet with regulatory requirements to meet and an often steep price tag, fall protection can seem like a daunting undertaking. However, with the right knowledge, implementing a fall protection system can easily fit into any company’s workflow and budget.

Legally, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) mandates that fall protection be provided at: 4ʹ in general industry; 5ʹ in shipyards; 6ʹ in the construction industry; 8ʹ in longshoring operations; and any height when working over dangerous equipment or machinery.
