Tether Track® Fall
Arrest System Protects Men of
Steel...
Mike Vance, Director of
Engineering at Bristol Metals in
Tennessee, bears a superhero’s
burden in that his job is all
about keeping people safe.
“We’re a manufacturer of
stainless steel pipe, and all
day we’re loading flatbed trucks
with multiple stacks of the pipe
for shipment,” said Vance.
“We’ve been loading trucks at
this facility for 50 years, and
the risk is certainly there for
someone to fall off of the truck
while it’s being loaded. There
have been incidents where people
have fallen. Nobody has been
seriously injured, but the risk
is there.” |

The Problems:
- People have fallen without
serious injury but risks are
still there
- OSHA requires fall
protection while on flat bed
trucks
“We looked into a new building
that would have overhead cranes
to load the trucks, but that
didn’t change anything for the
workers, who would still need to
be tied off. We talked about
using man-lifts to reach over
and keep the men off the truck,
but after studying the
situation, it would be very
difficult to effectively load
unless they can actually be on
the truck.”
The Solution:
Two free standing Tether Track
fall protection systems by
Gorbel. The primary system
features two cantilevered
monorails, which enables two
flatbeds to be loaded in the
same area simultaneously. Each
monorail uses Gorbel’s dual
track, allowing two workers to
pass one another safely without
disconnecting the lanyard from
their harness. A second Tether
Track system featured a single
cantilevered monorail, also with
the dual track.
“We narrowed it down to two
companies, and we chose Gorbel
Tether Track based on the fact
that they had the dual track and
we could put two men up there
and they could pass each other,”
said Vance. “The other systems
that we found could not offer
that.”

Insights and
Implications to Guide Your Fall Arrest Decisions
When it comes to engineered fall protection, there is mass confusion out there.
Decision-makers are confused about the various requirements; they are confused
about the roles and responsibilities involved in making the final decision on
equipment purchases; and certainly are confused about how to choose the right
fall protection solution for specific applications.
Gorbel, a leading manufacturer of engineered fall protection solutions, turned
to several industry experts to help clarify some of these issues. The complete
findings, and potential solutions, are found in the ebook, “Fall Arrest:
Insights and Ideas for Workplace Compliance,” which is

Making Sense of Fall Protection Lanyards
Fall hazards are abundant and varied, making them difficult to protect against.
Every single situation is different and employers need to work with employees to
ensure that the correct solution is in place. The solutions may be easy or they
may be complex, but either way, as the narrator of the opening sequence of The
Six-Million Dollar Man said, “We have the technology.”
While the answer to a problem can be something like guardrails, very often
employers are faced with the challenge of finding ways for their employees to
“tie-off”. As they work through the process, it is important that they determine
not just what the anchor point is going to be, but what type of lanyard to use.
Many factors come into play when determining this, not the least of which is
fall distance. But you can’t choose the proper equipment if you don’t understand
the options available.
