The Challenge: Balancing throughput with personnel safety
In the stone composite fabrication industry, moving raw slabs to finished countertops involves heavy material handling challenges. Slabs weighing between 200 and 1,000 lbs are difficult to maneuver manually. Before the facility integrated new material handling solutions, the fabrication team relied on forklifts, straps, and handcarts to move heavy material through a multi-stage workflow. This workflow included storage racks, CNC cutting, polishing stations, and the packaging area.
This workflow presented two distinct bottlenecks for facility managers. First, using forklifts close to human operators created a high-risk environment for injury. Second, manual handling lacked precision. This lack of precision caused frequent micro-fractures and surface damage to the stone composite, which increased waste and reduced throughput. The Solution: Gorbel Free Standing Work Station Bridge Crane
To resolve these inefficiencies, management implemented a Gorbel Free Standing Work Station Bridge Crane with a 24' bridge span. This solution was selected over traditional I-Beam construction for several technical reasons. First, the free-standing design optimized the footprint and maximized usable square footage because the support structures do not require ceiling-mounted anchoring. Second, the workstation crane was cost-effective. Compared to heavy-duty, fixed I-Beam cranes, it offered a lower capital expenditure while maintaining precision for loads up to 1,000 lbs. Third, the system provided modular scalability for future expansion. The modular bolt-together design allows the facility to extend the bridge or add additional runways when production requirements change.
The Execution: Precision material handling
The installation transformed the shop floor. It replaced disorganized forklift traffic with a streamlined overhead path. The visual record of the project shows the systematic installation of the uprights and the bridge assembly. Once live, operators utilized the Gorbel bridge crane to lift slabs directly from the storage rack. They guided them onto the CNC machine with 360-degree precision. The crane eliminated the oscillation and rough handling associated with straps and carts. This provided a controlled, steady lift that maintained the integrity of the material throughout the polishing process.

The results were immediate. By automating the lift-and-shift process, the facility successfully doubled its production output. Beyond the metrics, the "unknown" benefit was cultural. Workers were initially skeptical that a manual bridge crane would be slower than heavy equipment, but they quickly adopted the system for its ease of use.
