June is National Safety Month, and at Gorbel®, safety is something that is very important to us.
Week 3 of National Safety Council’s Month of Safety focuses on falls and fall prevention, and not only is that something that we at Gorbel® are experts in, but it is #1 on OSHA’s Top 10 List of Cited Violations for 2017. So this raises a question – what can we do to ensure fall protection in the workplace?
For most workers, Fall Protection means avoiding slips and falls as we move around the workplace. Here are some tips from National Safety Council on how to avoid slips and falls at work:
- Remove clutter, including electrical cords and other tripping hazards, from walkways, stairs and doorways
- Always wear proper footwear and clean up spills immediately
- Place a carpet down where workers are likely to be coming in with wet shoes from the snow or rain
For employees who work at heights, Fall Protection takes on a whole different meaning. OSHA requires fall protection be provided for any worker working 4’ above the ground. Here are some tips on how to avoid falls from heights:
- When working at heights, wear a full-body harness - If you fall, it will distribute “stopping force” across your thighs, pelvis, chest and shoulders to prevent severe injury
- Inspect your harness – It must be worn properly and in good condition
- Make sure you are connected – ensure you are fully locked into your harness, and ask your supervisor if you aren’t sure
