Moving More. Waiting Less. Separators Inc. Eliminates Bottlenecks and Maximizes Throughput with Gorbel Products

The Challenge:

Separators Inc. manufactures high-speed centrifuges and performs extensive repair and remanufacturing work. As the company grew, its previous facility became a limiting factor due to space constraints and an inefficient material handling setup. A mix of outdated crane systems, low ceilings, and poor layout resulted in workflow disruptions and frequent delays.

- Limited facility space with disorganized material flow and low ceilings
- Inefficient crane setup causing bottlenecks and frequent wait times
- Inability to support growth or increased production demands

The result: bottlenecks, inconsistent workflow, and a facility that couldn’t scale.

“We were constantly waiting on a crane. That’s not something you can afford when production is moving fast.”

The Solution: A Clean Slate—and a System Built for Performance

After moving into a larger facility, Separators Inc. worked with a distributor and Gorbel to design a completely new material handling approach. The solution combined multiple Gorbel technologies to create seamless coverage across every work area.

Key elements included:

- Custom Engineered bridge crane systems w/shared column structures, multiple bridges w/GS Hoists
- Gantry and jib cranes strategically placed by workflow
- Dedicated crane access for each work zone.

Motorization was introduced where it mattered most—allowing operators to move heavier loads (up to 4,000 lbs.) with less effort and greater control.

The Execution: Built for Flow and Designed for the Operator

This wasn’t just a crane install—it was a workflow transformation.

The new system supports a continuous process from teardown to final testing. Every team operates within its own zone, with immediate access to lifting equipment—no interruptions, no delays.

Motorized cranes reduce the effort required to move large components, while variable speed controls allow operators to shift from fast travel to precision placement instantly.

Additional features like enclosed track systems and conductor bar technology eliminate dangling cables and keep work areas clean and safe.

“Now we always have a crane available. Work just flows.”

Technical Questions

1. How does the use of shared column structures help in improving floor space utilization? When shared columns are used, multiple runways can be supported with fewer columns, reducing obstructions in the building and work spaces.

2. What role do motorized crane components play in improving operator ergonomics? Motorized systems and components eliminate the need for manual handling of materials, which lowers the physical strain on operators.

3. How long has Gorbel been providing ergonomic material handling solutions? Gorbel was founded in 1977 and will be celebrating 50 years in business in 2027.
